Long time, no write.

Dear readers, if you are still following me after all of this time, I thank you so much.  I have all but abandoned my blogs.  I have had little to no time for blogging.

Our home school has settled into a sweet little routine and the kids are doing beautifully.  Last I updated, we had just pulled the kids out of public school.  That was an adjustment and a half, but we got there.  It's been wonderful getting to know my babies all over again.  They are each so unique and interesting.  I feel lucky to have this time with them.

I am also working on getting my soaping business going.  I am building up a stock to take to the farmer's market in the spring.  We want to sell soap and our garden veggies.

Speaking of our garden, it did not do well this year.  Two summers worth of failure is starting to wear on us, but we will try again next year.  We think we know what the problem is.  We had no rain this summer, like much of the country.  We used the water hose and I am pretty sure that the water is killing our plants.  Our local municipalities add a lot of chlorine to our tap water.  We don't drink it for this reason.  I am hoping to get rain barrels put out next year so we do not have this problem again.  We did put in a fall garden and got a great yield of mustard, kale and collard greens.  We tried lettuce, kohlrabi, swiss chard, broccoli and cauliflower.  They did not do as well.


I have been working on our food stockpile this summer.  It's not anything like what I want right now, but it has us about a month ahead of the game.  I fear the food prices will increase soon because of the drought.  I don't want to be caught without enough food.  I have also been dehydrating some of the fruits I catch on sale.  I have dehydrated strawberries just waiting to dive into some tea.  

As a peace offering for my extended absence, I would like to share a recipe with you.  

Sausage Cheese Breakfast Biscuits

2 cups flour
¼ cup shortening
1 tsp salt
2 tbsp  baking powder
1 lb. sausage
2/3 C of milk
1 1/2 C of cheddar cheese, shredded

Preheat to 400 degrees.  Combine all ingredients until blended.  I put the ingredients into my food processor.  Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto an ungreased baking sheet.  Bake for 18 minutes, until light golden brown.  These freeze very well, too.  Serve with eggs and fruit.  My kids love them.  The taste like sausage balls.  Mmmmm.

  1. That recipe sounds yum! I'm going to try it out and see how the family likes the biscuits. I'm all about easy mornings.

    My garden suffered from too little sun/too much rain. The peas pulled it out at the end (but the moose got them), but the lettuces were bitter, the cabbages hardly did a thing,the broccoli never came to head. The kale was mediocre, but I planted that for the guinea pigs. Maybe next year will be better for both of us!
